If two numbers are in a / b form, then it said to be a fraction notation,

Here,    a (numerator)/ b (denominator) à  both ‘a’ and ‘b’ not equal to zero.

these called fractional notation.

Types of fractional notation:

        1. Proper Fraction.

        2. Improper Fraction.

        3. Mixed Fraction.

Proper Fraction:

In the proper fraction is the fraction in which the numerator (the top number) is less than the denominator (the bottom number).

Example:

1/2, 2/3, 5/7.

Improper Fraction:

An improper fraction is the numerator (the top number) is greater than or equal to the denominator (the bottom number).

Example:

4/3, 5/2, 7/5.

Mixed Fraction:

Mixed Fraction is the sum of whole number and proper fraction.

In mixed fraction addition we do the following steps,

1. Change all the  mixed fraction into the proper fraction.

2. Add the numerator if denominator are same.

3. If denominator is different make the common denominator by using LCM method.

4.Then reduce the answer or make the fraction as simple as possible  by dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Solved Example on Fractional Notation:

There are 25 boys and 35 girls in a class of 60 students. What fractional notation of the class are the girls?
Choices:

A. 7/12
B. 5/12
C. 1/12
D. 25/35

Correct Answer: A
Solution:

Step 1:
Total number of students in a class = 60.
Step 2:
Number of boys in the class = 25.
Step 3:
Number of girls in the class = 35.
Step 4:

Fractionalnotation of the class that is girls = Number of girls in class/ Total number of students in class                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             = 35/60    [Substitute the values]

= (5*7)/ (5*12) [Write 35 as 5*7 and 60 as 5*12]

= 7/12 [Reduced term of the fraction]
Step 5:
The fractional notation of girls in the class is 7/12.
